Ask Vox

Last post, I showed you a website called Yahoo! Answers (you can see that post here). Today's Sensational Site is similiar in several ways. Ask Vox, like Yahoo! Answers, is a website where you can ask questions and get them answered. The difference, however, is that your questions are solved by a talking computer program!

How does this computer program, named Vox, know so much? Simple. When it encounters a question is doesn't already know the answer to, the question becomes open to the general public to resolve (again, sort of like Yahoo! Answers). Once, a question has been answered, it is added the Vox's information database.

Google Answers

This is the last question and answer site, I promise! I just thought I should get through this one today. Google Answers is for very serious questions. Questions serious enough that are willing to pay for answers. For as little as $2.50, a "carefully screened" researcher will answer pretty much any question you can think of.

Yahoo! Answers

Yahoo! Answers is today's Sensational Site. It is a huge online community of real people who ask questions and answer them. I've found this website really useful for those questions that just can't be answered by a computer. For example, I once asked the question "What is the name of the song in this video?" and then linked to it. Within about 5 minutes, someone had answered. Yahoo! Answers is also great if you have some spare time and just want to help people out!

Tickle: Tests

Today's Sensational Site has quite an odd name. It's called Tickle and it's an online database of fun tests and quizzes. Some examples are "Which Star Wars character are you?", "What's your psychic strength?", "Are you smarter than you think?", and "Are you a perfectionist?". Take one of these tests (or one of many others) by visiting the Tickle website!

Go to Tickle

Also, as a bonus, check out EssayGenerator.com. Like the name implies, it will instantanously generate an essay on any topic imaginable!

P.S. Don't worry. Tommorrow there will be photos again!

QuikMaps

Today's Sensational Site allows you to create custom maps. QuikMaps allows you to add your own labels and symbols to maps generated by Google Maps. You can then print the map off, email it, or put it on your website! Oh, and sorry there is no picture of today's Sensational Site, I'm having some trouble with Blogger.

I guide to this program can be found on Wanderingken.com.

DVD Easter Eggs

An easter egg is a hidden feature on a DVD. For example, on the Star Wars III DVD if you type a secret code (which you can find on today's Sensational Site) on your DVD remote, you can see a video of Yoda rapping! Search for your favorite movie on this site, and discover new features on your DVD you knew even knew existed!

Go to DVDEasterEggs.com

If you still don't understand what an easter egg is, here is an explanation from DVDEasterEggs.com:

What is a DVD Easter Egg?

This is probably the most obvious, and most frequently asked question. Of course the chances are that if you found this site, you may already know, but if not, here goes. As most will know, during the Easter holiday, people will paint eggs, then hide them for their children to find. This is the traditional idea behind the "Easter Egg". Extend that idea into the digital world, and an Easter Egg is something that is hidden, in some form of media. Way back when Microsoft released Excel (as an example) there was an easter egg in the software. The developers hid a game in the program. You had to fill certain fields of the spreadsheet with a specific value, etc. and you were able to unlock this 'Doom-like' game. Well much the same concept goes for easter eggs on DVD's. The developers who make the DVD's, their menu systems, etc. tend to hide special features on the disc.

Information

Information is an infinately zoomable picture mozaic! Its really neat. You click on a spot of a picture, you zoom in. When this happens, you realize that the picture is not made up of normal pixels, but of other photos! You then keep zooming in until you are left with only one pixel/photograph, and then the process starts over again. Try it out. Just be careful, you might like it so much that you end up spending the rest of you life on this page!

The makers of "Information" have also created several other awesome picture manipulation type things. View all of them here.

iSerenity

Sometimes when you are working, sounds it the background can be very distracting. You can try to cover up the noise with music, but the music itself can also be distracting. So what do you do? You use iSerenity. It has several "white noise" sounds, like rainfall, birds chirping, crickets, and typewriters. Like all Sensational Sites, you don't need to pay to use this service. So try it out!

Goggles!

Goggles! The Google Maps Flight Simulator. This site uses the power of Google Maps to create a game where you control an airplane which can fly to anywhere in the entire world (if you have enough time). You can make the plane go right, left, up and down. If you go down too far, you crash. Also, you can make your airplane fire missiles, which is kind of weird because they don't do anything! Starting places include London, New York, Dublin, Boston, Paris, Helsinki, and more.

Rollyo

Here is today's Sensational Site:

Rollyo

Here is what BBC World said about Rollyo:

"Rollyo offers the ability to search the content of a list of specified websites, allowing you to narrow down the results to pages from websites that you already know and trust."

I tested this out by creating my own search engine from just one site (this blog). You can try it out here.

Lots of Sensational Sites

Today I'm going to a bunch of Sensational Sites that aren't quite good enough for their own posts, but are still deserving of a place on the cool sites blog. Here goes:

Website Flags
: If Google, Amazon, or Yahoo had flags, what would they look like?

Website Remote Controls: Same sort of idea as above, but with remote controls.

Logo Game
: Can you match the company with the logo?

Ordering Pizza in 2008
: What will it be like?

FindInForums: A search engine for forums.

Bad Joke Generator: Quite self-explanitory.

Plen: A movie of a Japanese robot.

Incorrect Predictions

"No one will pay good money to get from Berlin to Potsdam in one hour when he can ride his horse there in one day for free." – King William I of Prussia, on hearing of the invention of trains, 1864.

The above is just one of many hilariously wrong predictions made by people from a long time ago. This Sensational Site is extremely funny!

Comic Strips

Today's Sensational Site is a really simple white page which shows many different comic strips of that day. Yes, I know that you can find the same thing in your newspaper, but your newspaper will not have as much selection as this page. Also, its nice to be able to access all these comics on the web. Joe's Goals

A really cool website that lets you easily keep track of all your goals. I've been using this for the past month or so, and it helps me a lot. I love its simplicity!

Features include:

-Input positive (ex. exercising) and negative (ex. eating a doughnut) goals.
-Assign different values to different goals.
-Assign goals to certain days. For example, you might only want to exercise on Mondays.
-Share your goals with friends.
-Read generated reports of how you did in the last 30, 60, or 90 days.

Two Sensational Sites!

Today I've decided to be really nice and present to you... TWO SENSATIONAL SITES!

#1 File Destructor

Probably not that ethical to actually use, but cool anyways. FileDestructor.com destroys your files, so that you can "Send trashed files and blame your faulty computer, instead of confessing that you are a lazy bum who just wants to play videogames."

#2 Free Classic Audio Books

A relatively long list of classics made into audio books. Free audio books include: Tom Sawyer, Treasure Island, Alice in Wonderland, White Fang, and more!
